Will walked down the dorm halls with Dune. It was late, and the sun would be up in a few short hours. They’d stayed to help clean up after the party had ended. There were a lot of food dishes to tidy up. Will slowed down at his door.

Dune stopped, glancing at him. “Are you not staying in mine?”

Will shook his head. If he had to lie down next to Dune, he just knew that he wouldn’t be able to stop himself. Not when Dune was meeting him halfway in everything.

Dune faced him fully. “I don’t mean we have to do anything,” he said. His voice was level. He had been drinking water only for hours now. “You stayed last night because of your nightmares. Stay again. I promise I won’t try anything, and I really don’t mean anything else by it.”

“I believe you.” Will exhaled slowly. “But I feel like I’ll probably try to start something.”

“How about I promise to turn you down if you do?”

“Somehow, I doubt that.”

Dune shared a sheepish smile with him. “You’re probably right.” After a moment, the smile faded. “I can sleep on the couch. You can have the bed. Or if you feel bad about that, we can do it the other way around.”

“It’s late, and I’m wrecked. I’m pretty sure I’m going to sleep like the dead, no matter what,” Will answered him. “Thank you for the offer.”

Dune studied him another moment before sighing. “I’m going to leave the door unlocked. If you change your mind and you want to come in, do. I’m serious about there being no pressure.”

Will’s heart was thumping all over again. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Want to go for breakfast tomorrow?” Dune’s hands sank into his pockets, and he looked at Will expectantly. Will didn’t miss the hint of nerves that crept into Dune. The way he held his shoulders always gave him away.

Tomorrow. Will’s heart pinched. A throb of fear prodding his insides all at once as the distant awareness that things could be very different come morning became a looming threat. He tried not to let that feeling overwhelm him. Dune wasn’t giving any hint that tomorrow Will would be cut out of his life.

“It’s almost four a.m. There’s no way you’re waking up before noon,” Will said. “How about we grab lunch instead?”

“Sounds good,” Dune said, smiling.

It felt strange to part from Dune now. “Goodnight,” Will said.

“Goodnight, Will.” Dune bent down, pecking his cheek before continuing down the hall to his own room. Will watched him go, lightly touching the spot he’d kissed.
